Sucker Kiss

I like a simple life. Wake up at 7, clock in at 9, lock up the office at 5. No need for any fancy jobs. Want evidence that your wife is fooling around with the apartment manager? Pay me and I'll get it for you. Want verification that your employee really did break his leg? Fine by me, just write up a check.
Evelyn, though. She was something else. Asked me to find her sister for her, and everything went to hell not one hour into the case. When I wasn't in trouble, Evelyn was in trouble.. When neither of us were in trouble, well, ol' Tommy and his Tommy Gun Teamsters would show up to make trouble for us.
In the end, I found that Evelyn didn't even have a sister, just some unpaid debts to Tommy. And with him shot up and lying at the bottom of the river, Evelyn was home free. Of course, the fact that she had no money for Tommy meant she also had no money for me.
So imagine my surprise when she waltzed back in my office, still dressed in that slinky black number she'd had on the previous evening. A small pout accentuated her pillowy lips, and hints of tears sparkled in her dark eyes.
She spoke. "I came here to apolo—"
I took her in my arms and kissed her just like those stars you see at the movies.
